Bruern Abbey, former home of the Astors, was bought by my client in the ’80s to convert into a prep school for boys. We formed new cloisters in the courtyard and converted a warren of servants’ rooms into a hall, new dorms and school rooms. The school was eventually moved to Chesterton House near Bicester and my design work continued there. I was also commissioned to work on a ruined chateau which became a summer school in the Loire Valley for the same client, which is another ongoing project.
