I was asked by local friends to design something for a neglected part of a very beautiful garden with a large swimming pool.
As the client puts it: “Our sheltered, south-facing, terraced garden features a swimming pool, previously with a dull feather-board fence at the boundary of the neighbouring property which concealed a dying six foot Leylandii hedge. We asked Anthony to replace this suburban screen with something more in keeping with the beautiful countryside in which we live.”
One end of the pool had an attractive terraced sitting area and changing rooms, but the other, which incidentally had the evening sun, was scrubby and unattractive. I designed an oak pergola and seating area.
It came out rather well, and the clients liked it: “Anthony designed a magnificent, classically-proportioned colonnade with infill trellises, garlanded with flowers and shrubs. To the great delight of us, our family and other guests, he has created a much admired focal point in our garden; now we could be in Provence!”
