Highgate Kitchen

The position of the kitchen in the house has moved up the hierarchy from lowly servant quarters to one of the principal rooms of the house.  As such the importance of quality of materials, attention to detail, and the overall aesthetic effect has greatly increased.  My aim in bringing the kitchen ‘upstairs’ has been to draw from the wider architectural vocabulary to reflect this newly gained importance.   A traditional design such as this has hardly dated in 30 years.  This is a good example of moving the position of the kitchen from an unimportant area of the house into what was formerly a library.
