This 2,800 sq ft mid-Victorian house in Kensington, London, was extended to 11,000 sq ft, including a new pool, spa, cinema and gym in the newly formed basement.
The photo and perspective below show my starting point – the orginal four story house, with to its right some trees and garages.
My first proposal is shown in the watercolour image below. It included a pediment, with which the client was very happy, but unfortunately this was turned down by the planning officer, despite there being other pedimented houses of similar size in the street. She thought it looked too grand.
After discussion and further proposals, this is the compromise which was eventually built. As the planning officer wanted, it looks more like a row of terraced houses than a single large house. The new extension is to the right starting at the front door. I still prefer my original proposal – and so did the clients.
