When I first started thinking seriously about kitchen design in the ‘80s, it was quite rare to devote serious resources to making a kitchen aesthetically pleasing. The origin of the kitchen was a room principally for servants. As such it was normally pushed into a basement and, whilst possibly efficient, was not designed for comfort or to be visually pleasing. Kitchens were meant to be purely functional. Nowadays kitchens are often the central hub of the house with the open plan kitchen/living room being very popular.
