WINNER, Alterations to a Listed Building, BaNES Building Control Awards 2019 “A well detailed and sympathetic extension to a regency villa. A compact but stately addition worthy of this charming regency villa, and a pleasing arrangement of rooms to suit present day lifestyle and hierarchy of living arrangements.” (Judges, BaNES Building Control Awards 2019)

“Anthony’s final design fulfilled every item of our remit:-
• Contemporary living – space, useful space, was created where none had previously existed. Well-defined areas have made the various functions in our lives easy and comfortable. There is absolutely nothing we would alter, even after four years of living here.
• Period features – all that existed, remained, and the new accommodations and fenestration paid exacting homage to what already existed. In fact, by extending those features, Anthony managed to enhance the original 1846 proportions of the building resulting in an aesthetic improvement to Goodridge’s original works. The extension won a much coveted local design award and has drawn much admiration from friends and neighbours. We are both proud and happy with our re-designed home and find it an absolute joy to live in.” (Roy Carson)

“I have known Anthony for over 35 years during which time I have witnessed, as a layman outside his specialty, an amazing versatility in developing beautiful original creations. His work contains detail that respects authenticity in an almost educational way. Be it a study, a library, a swimming pool or a palatial “folly”, nothing can escape the creativity of his exceptional imagination. A gifted genius with the designer’s pen who can concoct dreams that are nonetheless totally capable of turning into reality. A truly amazing talent whose modesty attempts to conceal his brilliance.” (Matheos Los)

“Our sheltered, south-facing, terraced garden features a swimming pool, previously with a dull feather-board fence at the boundary of the neighbouring property which concealed a dying six foot Leylandii hedge. We asked Anthony to replace this suburban screen with something more in keeping with the beautiful countryside in which we live. He designed a magnificent, classically-proportioned colonnade with infill trellises, garlanded with flowers and shrubs. To the great delight of us, our family and other guests, he has created a much admired focal point in our garden; now we could be in Provence!” (Michel Earp)

“I have worked with Anthony for over 20 years on numerous interesting projects in London, South of France and the Isle of Wight. In that time Anthony’s unbelievably creative mind never ceased to please and delight me, with exciting ideas all produced with painstaking detail on beautiful hand-drawn plans and – if you are lucky – coloured with watercolours.” (William Woodward-Fisher)

“Anthony Paine’s contribution to the modern image of Gieves & Hawkes cannot be underestimated. From his first commission in 1997 to transform No1 & No2 Savile Row into a single Flagship Store, he created a style that was replicated to over 110 stores globally by 2008. Anthony’s blend of Regency architectural accuracy, and attention to modern retail requirements such as use of space, functionality and density, led to global success in countries which had yet to know our name. By being consistent in his approach, we managed to have a distinctive British heritage feel in shopping malls from Hong Kong to Beijing, Tokyo and Dubai! I should point out that despite having exacting standards, Anthony always worked to a tight budget and delivered all projects on time. On a personal note, it was a pleasure and an honour to work with such a professional whose use of space is unique in our industry.” (Ray Clacher, Managing Director, Gieves & Hawkes)

“When I moved into a listed Vicarage which required, amongst other things, a new kitchen I wanted not only an efficient modern kitchen but one that was in keeping with the age of the house. Anthony Paine’s classical designs and expertise as a cook gave me the confidence that he would design a kitchen that not only looks good but works brilliantly. He did just that, and it is still in use 20 years later.” (Alan Spriggs)

“Anthony began working with Gieves & Hawkes on its flagship store in the mid-nineties. On the strength of his beautiful and innovative work for us – together with his meticulous attention to detail – we worked with him then for over a decade during which time he completed the designs for well over 100 shops and concessions for the UK and for Asia. He is a delight to work with – completely reliable, pragmatic when it’s needed and the very best of company.” (Mark Henderson, Chairman, Gieves & Hawkes)
